A greasy kitchen floor and a toilet bowl with a crusty ring can both look like they need a heavy-duty clean. But they call for different chemistry. Alkaline cleaners are commonly used to lift grease and oils, while acidic cleaners are used to dissolve mineral deposits like limescale.
What does pH tell you?
A solution with a pH below 7 is acidic, 7 is neutral, and above 7 is alkaline. The pH is a starting point. The product’s formulation, recommended dilution and approved surfaces also matter. Two cleaners with similar pH levels can be designed for different jobs.
Alkaline cleaners tackle grease and oils
In a commercial kitchen, repeated cooking can leave a greasy film that holds onto dirt. An alkaline degreaser formulated for the floor can loosen that film so it can be scrubbed and removed. Many degreasers contain ingredients that help disperse oil in the cleaning solution, making it easier to lift away.
Use an alkaline cleaner when the buildup is greasy and the product is approved for the surface. Check the label for dilution, contact time and rinsing instructions.
Acidic cleaners tackle mineral buildup
If you see a chalky, crusty deposit where water repeatedly dries, you may be dealing with limescale. An acidic descaler can dissolve that buildup on compatible surfaces, such as certain toilet bowls and washroom fixtures.
Acid can dull or etch sensitive finishes, including marble and some terrazzo. Check both the product label and the surface manufacturer’s care instructions before using a descaler.
Where a neutral cleaner fits
For light dirt and everyday grime, a neutral or near-neutral cleaner approved for the surface is often enough. A washroom floor can have both an oily film and mineral deposits, while the tile, grout and nearby fixtures can each have different care requirements. We identify the buildup and the finish before choosing how to clean it.
Never mix cleaning products
Keep acidic toilet cleaners and descalers away from bleach, including bleach already in the bowl. Mixing them can release dangerous fumes. Follow the label’s instructions for ventilation and protective equipment.
